Newsletter - November 2020

Dear friends of HfP/GOV,

With the start of the new academic term, I would like to welcome you back at HfP/GOV by giving you a short overview of what has happened in the last months at our school. Despite challenging times like these, the Hochschule für Politik München as well as the TUM School of Governance are nationally and internationally on the road to success with our unique teaching and research profile at the interface of politics and technology.

As we all continue to make our way through these turbulent times and face the challenges that COVID-19 is creating in our families, social circles and colleagues around the world, it is so inspiring to see how we can stay connected with digital formats. We are especially pleased to welcome more than 200 new students to our Bachelor and Master program this winter term.

The majority of courses will take place digitally this term. With the help of both synchronous and asynchronous formats, all professorships are striving to use creativity and personal responsibility as well as dedication to ensure that the winter term 2020/2021 will be a tremendous success for all. We are aware of the fact that learning on the screen differs significantly from in-class teaching. But this also includes some positive aspects, such as the fact that we can offer more than 115 different courses at HfP/GOV.

In addition, we are excited about five new faculty colleagues. We warmly welcome Timm Betz, an expert in the area of international political economy; Janina Steinert, the new professor for global health; Katrin Paula, who is focusing on global security and technology; Amy Pond, professor for politics of finance; as well as Yannis Theocharis, who holds the chair of digital governance. Together with their teams, they will expand our expertise portfolio and will offer a variety of new courses for our students.

Moreover, members of our faculty started working on new research projects, such as the Kopernikus Project Ariadne (Prof. Miranda Schreurs); the "Pan-European Response to the Impacts of COVID-19 and Future Pandemics und Epidemics (PERISCOPE)" (Prof. Tim Büthe); "The Differential Privacy: A new approach to Social Big Data" (Prof. Simon Hegelich); or the "Learning from the “Frontrunner”? A Multidisciplinary Analysis of the Chinese Social Credit System and its Impact on Germany" project (Prof. da Conceição-Heldt). You will find more information below and on the HfP/GOV website.

I hope that each and every one of you is full of enthusiasm for the new academic year and I hope to welcome you soon again directly at HfP/GOV.

Best regards,

Eugénia da Conceição-Heldt

Reform Rector of the Hochschule für Politik München

Dean of the TUM School of Governance
